Edgar Brookins

 

Edgar Brookins is General Manager for the Washington Afro American Newspaper, Washington, DC.  In this position, he is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the DC Office of the historic Afro American Newspapers as well as the distribution and management of the circulation program. His responsibilities also include community outreach, submission of weekly reports,  compile the weekly Sophisticated Settings page(editorially) where he has featured over 125 non-profit organizations during the past year to give them visibility and focus on their community projects and programs, is an occasional news contributor to Radio One-DC and WHUR’S Reporter’s Roundtable.

 

Edgar has received several awards from local church,  community and military  organizations for his support and commitment to Youth and Homeless Veterans.  An avid supporter of Black History Programs, he leads the annual celebration at the Army Fort Myer, VA Gospel Service. He also established the “Patriotic Circle of Friends” program with the support of the Afro’s senior management which sends weekly, the Afro Newspaper to the Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

 

Edgar received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Jackson State University and during his 20-year plus career as an Army Officer(1969 -1990) he  completed the Armed Forces Staff College and the Command General  Staff College(civilian Master’s equivalent) and served in several command and staff  positions while on active duty.

 

His membership affiliations include Black Public Relations Society, NABJ, NAACP and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He currently serves as Member, National Black History Month Luncheon Planning Committee; Member, African American Advisory Board, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children; Member, African American Media Advisory Board, Bread for the World;  Communications Ministry Leader/Member, Parish Council, Fort Myer Gospel Service.

 

A native of Benton, MS, is the proud parents of three daughters and one son: Tara, Angel, Ciera and Dexter, who iscurrently on active duty, Lt. Colonel,  US Army(an Omega Man also).  

 

He is currently on a crusade for Prostate Cancer Awareness among African American men. Recently diagnosed with the illness and has successfully completed 2-year plus treatment program;  he wants to insure that Brothers are getting their annual screening from age 45 and forward.
